Collection Description

Biographical Note

John F. Deane, author, poet, and editor, was born on Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland on December 8th, 1943. He was educated at Mungret College, Limerick, and University College, Dublin, where he received his M.A. in modern English and American literature. He worked as a teacher at St. Aidan's Secondary School, Whitehall, Dublin, for 10 years. In 1978, he founded the national poetry society, Poetry Ireland, and resigned from teaching in 1979 to develop the society and write full-time.

Deane married Barbara Sheridan in 1973, with whom he had two daughters, Laura and Catherine. Barbara died in December of 1980. In 1979, Deane launched the poetry magazine, The Poetry Ireland Review. He married Ursula Foran in 1984, with whom he had his third daughter, Mary. In 1985, Deane founded The Dedalus Press, which he continues to edit and direct. The Dedalus Press also distributes books from the Peppercanister Press of Dublin. Deane publishes "Waxwing Poems from the House of Icarus."

The John F. Deane papers includes correspondence, manuscripts, diaries, scrapbooks and newspaper clippings related to Deane's life, literary output and career as a literary editor. The correspondents include Samuel Beckett, Daniel Berrigan, Alaine Bosquet, Padraig Daly, Paul Durcan, John Ennis, Monk Gibbon, Robert Graecen, Michael Hamburger, Seamus Heaney, Richard Kell, Thomas Kinsella, Philip Larkin, Denise Levertov, Derek Mahon, Ewart Milne, John Montague, Nuala Ni Dhombnaill, Dennis O'Driscoll, Stephen Spender and C.
